STAR FARM CHICAGO PROGRAMS

Since 2016, Star Farm is more than a farm--it's a classroom and community center without walls. We're building a resilient food hub in Back of the Yards through empowering local women, youth, and people with disabilities because we're committed to nurture all generations of growers and food sovereignty leaders.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN GARDENING PROGRAM

Star Farm provides vocational training in landscaping, horticulture, food safety, and nutrition for mothers and caregivers while providing meaningful programming for their children so childcare is not a barrier. We work with local family resource centers to recruit interested families, especially transient or young mothers, and mothers who are recovering from domestice abuse. Participants receive a certificate upon completion from Star Farm and the Univerisity of Illinois Nutrition Program.

FARMERS WITH DISABILITIES

Adults and youth with disabilities play a huge role at Star Farm. Between learning how to use tools, care for fruit trees, harvest and pack fresh produce, participants engage with the community and other growers, building a culture of inclusivity and visibility for this important population. Their participation is not only educational, but acts as a springboard to employment through Star Farm or other opportunities.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING

We are committed to providing a safe and meaningful work and learning environment for youth in Back of the Yards. Providing after-school and summer opportunities is an essential service to engage and educate youth. Participating in the community farmstand, learning principals of sustainability, and growing are skills that they build upon year after year.

FRESH, LOCAL PRODUCE FOR ALL

Whether it's through pop-up markets, food pantry donations, or direct home-delivery, Star Farm works with local agencies and case workers in Back of the Yards to identify households in need of fresh produce.

Especially for single-parent households and homebound seniors. Help us share the bounty with our neighbors. Your support helps with transportation costs, packaging, and employing local individuals from the neighborhood for outreach and delivery

$200 will bring fresh produce to a single individual all season long

$350 will provide produce to a family
